Football Without Barriers: Inside Japan’s Legacy Match 2026
Football Without Barriers: Inside Japan’s Legacy Match 2026
On 14 March 2026, the Japan Inclusive Football Federation (JIFF) transformed Minato City, Tokyo, into an inspiring celebration of inclusive sport - the Japan Legacy Match 2026. Hosted at the Minato City Sports Center, the legacy match welcomed around 50 players and more than 1,000 attendees, creating a vibrant space where football became a shared language beyond ability, age or background.
Building a Legacy of Inclusion Through Sport
The Japan Legacy Match was launched following a cooperation agreement signed in 2023 between the Japan Inclusive Football Federation and Minato City - a city district known for its commitment to inclusive urban development. The event was designed to do more than to showcase football. It created a space where people could watch, experience and participate in disability football, fostering natural interaction and understanding between individuals with and without disabilities. The vision of the legacy match was simple yet powerful - to build a more inclusive society through the universal language of sport.
The event brought together a diverse range of participants and formats, highlighting the richness of disability football such as matches featuring powerchair football teams and matches played by blind football teams. Apart from the matches, the event also included:
- Football clinic for elementary school children with intellectual disabilities
- Interactive disability football experience programmes
- Opportunities for players and the public to connect and engage
The players were from elementary school children to junior high school age and above, reflecting the event’s inclusive approach across generations.

More Than Just a Game: Empowering Players
For players with disabilities, the Japan Legacy Match offered more than a competition, but a fantastic platform to showcase their abilities, share their passion for football and connect with the wider community. For young athletes especially, the impact was very powerful - playing in an inclusive and supportive environment allowed them to:
- Build confidence and self-belief
- Develop teamwork and communication skills
- Challenge themselves in new settings
- Experience a strong sense of belonging
Importantly, the young players saw other athletes with disabilities as role models, which reinforced the idea that football is a sport they can continue to enjoy and pursue.

A Community United Through Parafootball
One of the most important features of the Japan Legacy Match was its strong community involvement. By hosting the event in a local sports facility and inviting residents to attend and participate, the organisers created a space where awareness grew naturally. Families, volunteers and local community members played a vital role by:
- Supporting players and teams
- Assisting with event operations
- Creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere
Local children, which were already engaged in learning about inclusion, actively contributed to the event, helping to build empathy and understanding among the next generation.
By giving people the opportunity to see and experience disability football, the event helped to break down misconceptions and reshape attitudes. Moments of interaction, both on the pitch and in the stands, demonstrated that football is truly a game for everyone.

Looking Ahead - Growing Inclusive Para football in Japan and Beyond
The Japan Legacy Match is not just a one-day event - it is part of a broader vision for the future. The organisers hope it will inspire similar initiatives across Japan, encourage regular interaction between people with and without disabilities, and help make inclusive football a natural part of community sport. More than an event, it is a model for others to follow - showing how football can bring people together beyond barriers and turn inclusion into a lived experience.
The message of the Japan Legacy Match 2026 to the world is clear: sport has the power to connect people beyond differences. Even small initiatives can create meaningful change.
As the organisers shared:
“Organising this event was a meaningful experience for our team because it showed how football can create connections between people who might not otherwise meet. Seeing players, children, families and community members come together through sport reaffirmed the social value of inclusive football”.
At Para Football, we are proud to continue showcasing the incredible impact of inclusive football initiatives, inspiring the communities around the world to develop and promote parafootball and create more opportunities for all.
